With the development of taxanes, vinorelbine, gemcitabine, capecitabine, and epirubicin in the 1990s, along with aromatase inhibitors , the number of new drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration FDA ; per decade has increased substantially Figure 1 ; .46 Giordano and colleagues evaluated the survival of 834 women who had recurrent breast cancer between 1974 and 2000. All patients had received prior adjuvant treatment with an anthracycline. The study showed an association between year of recurrence and survival, when other prognostic factors were taken into account. A multivariate analysis showed a trend t o ward increased survival, with a 1% risk reduction for each increasing year.46 Andre and co-workers rev i ewed survival trends in 724 patients with MBC at the time of diagnosis. Median survival for those diagnosed between 1987 and 1994 was 23 months, vs 29 months in those diagnosed between 1994 and 2000. Five-year survival was 11% for those diagnosed between 1987 and 1993, compared to 28% diagnosed between 1994 and 2000 [Figure 2].47 Chia and associates reported the impact of new agents on 2152 patients treated between 1991 and 2001. The median survival for cohort 1 1991 to 1992, baseline ; was 438 days, similar to the 450 days in cohort 2 1994 to 1995, release of paclitaxel and vinorelbine ; . Cohort 3 1997 to 1998, docetaxel and aromatase inhibitors ; had a median survival of 564 days, compared to cohort 4 1999 to 2001, capecitabine and trastuzumab ; , 667 days. These results represented a statistically improved survival for cohort 3 vs cohorts 1 and 2 and cohort 4 vs cohort 3.48 One must interpret retrospective.

| Capecitabine bulkSection Consultees SCHARR#2 Comments I don't think this enquiry should be restricted to Dukes C. There's a paradox here: MOSAIC the oxaliplatin trial ; included both C and B patients though the licence application has been for Dukes' C only. Conversely XACT the capecitabine trial ; included only Dukes' C but if licensed oncologists will want to use it for both B and C regardless of the licence. I think you should consider both drugs in both stages. Within the background section of the draft scope the text reads, "In 2000, there were approximately 22, 000 new cases of colon cancer diagnosed in England and Wales." This statement is incorrect. It should read as follows "In 2000, there were approximately 19, 000 new cases of colon cancer diagnosed in England and Wales."1 Cancer service guidelines Page: 2 also say that "the place of chemotherapy in the treatment of patients with Dukes' stage B cancer must be a matter for discussion between patients and their oncologists", ie by implication at least some of these patients should receive it too. 6 months of 5FUFA treatment as the standard comparator - True, but many centres use the "QUASAR weekly" regimen which lasts 30 weeks. For oxaliplatin, the company name should be ` Sanofi-Aventis'. Sanofi Synthelabo, not Aventis The registration timelines for oxaliplatin can be updated to state: `A Mutual Recognition Procedure was completed successfully in October 2004 which resulted in an extended indication: `adjuvant treatment of stage III Duke's C ; colon cancer after complete resection of primary tumour'. Action No change Interventions will be appraised within their licensed indications for use Dukes stage C colon cancer ; Amend scope and carbachol.
Background: The combination of I, O and 5FU FOLFOXIRI ; has manageable toxicities and demonstrated increased activity and efficacy compared to FOLFIRI in MCRC in a phase III trial by the G.O.N.O. group. Oral C demonstrated a reduced toxicity coupled with similar efficacy over 5FU and therefore it could enhance the treatment compliance. Patients and methods: The G.O.N.O. started a pilot study evaluating the combination of escalating doses of C with fixed doses of I, O XELOXIRI ; in MCRC patients not previously treated for metastatic disease, with not resectable metastatic disease, age 75 years, and adequate renal, hepatic and bone marrow function. The primary study objective is the definition of the recommended dose of C in combination with I and O, secondary objectives are safety and activity of the combination and analysis of plasma pharmacokinetics of C, I and O. The planned treatment in the first 3 patients was: I 165 mg sqm over 1-h on day 1, O 85 mg sqm over 2-h on day 1 and C 2500 mg sqm die from day 1 to 7, repeated every 2 weeks. Results: Up today 15 patients have been enrolled. Main patients characteristic are: sex M F ; 7 8, age median range ; 65 4273, sites of disease single multiple ; 4 11. The dose limiting toxicity DLT ; was G34 diarrhea that was observed in 2 out 6 patients receiving C at 2500 mg sqm, in 2 out 3 patients receiving C at 3000 mg sqm and in 0 out 6 patients receiving C at 2000 mg sqm. Therefore this last dose was defined the recommended dose. No other G34 toxicities were observed, 3 patients were hospitalized because of toxicity, but no toxic deaths occurred. Conclusions: The combination of C, I and O is feasible with diarrhea being the DLT. The recommended dose of C is 2000 mg sqm. We are now accruing patients at this dose level to evaluate safety, activity and plasma pharmacokinetics. Partially supported by Fondazione ARCO. Methods: We evaluated pts older than 70 years with rectal adenocarcinoma uT3-T4N + or uT2N + with inferior location 5 cm from the anal margin ; . Chemotherapy CT ; consisted of a weekly schedule of oxaliplatin 60 mg m2 for 6 times and 5-fluorouracil continuous infusion 225 mg m2 die d138 OXA 5FU ; or only 5FU or capecitabine 1300 mg m2 die throughout the radiotherapy RT ; course. RT was delivered in all the pts up to a dose of 50.4 Gy in daily fractions of 1.8 Gy. Rectal surgery with TME was performed 68 weeks after the end of neoadjuvant treatment. Results: Twenty-eight pts were treated from April 2002 to February 2006. The pt characteristics were: 19 men, 9 women; median age 74 years 7082 median KPS 100 70100 stage: 2 uT2N M0, 1 uT2N + M0, 14 uT3N M0, 9 uT3N + M0, 1 uT4N M0, 1 uT4N + M0; CT: 22 OXA 5FU, 3 5FU, capecitabine. The compliance of treatment was the following: 18 64.3% ; pts completed the planned chemo-radiotherapy treatment, 6 pts 21.4% ; reduced or interrupted only chemotherapy and 4 pts 14.3% ; both chemo and radiotherapy all pts in OXA 5FU treatment ; . The relevant causes of treatment modification were: 1 bowel perforation, 3 cardiac complications FFA, angina pectoris, arrhythmia ; , 1 Jacksonian epilepsy, 2 acute neurotoxicity, 1 gr3 neutropenia and 2 gr3 4 diarrhoea. The major toxicities grade 34 ; were: diarrhoea 14.3% ; , stomatitis 3.5% ; , neutropenia 3.5% ; and epitheliolysis 3.5% ; . So far 23 pts have undergone surgery 12 low-anterior resections, 10 abdominal-perineal amputations, 1 trans-anal excisions for refusal of major surgery 5 completed chemoradiotherapy and are waiting for surgery. Pathological downstaging occurred in 15 62.2% ; pts, including 5 21.7% ; pT0N0 and 9 39.1% ; pTmicN0. Adjuvant chemotherapy was performed in 13 59.9% ; pts 12 5FU FA and 1 capecitabine ; . Conclusions: These results suggest that: 1 ; neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy is feasible in elderly pts with acceptable toxicity; 2 ; studies planned in elderly pts, and also comprising a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, will be needed for optimal integrated treatment. 1. INTRODUCTION Species belonging to more than 100 genera of flowering plants and over forty genera of ants are involved in symbiotic ant-plant protection mutualisms [16]. Many of these symbioses involve only a restricted set of ant and plant partners, and some are speciesspecific. Ecological and evolutionary interactions in these symbioses are strong, and species involved show numerous specialisations. As in other intense interspecies interactions, many aspects of the functioning of these symbioses must be chemically mediated. However, the chemical ecology of ant-plant symbioses is virtually unexplored [49]. While nutritional aspects of.

Energy supply in developing countries is facing enormous challenges. More than 1.6 billion people in rural areas are still without access to electricity. On the other hand, in urban areas with rapid economic growth, it becomes more and more difficult to adapt energy generation capacity to the ever soaring demand. Meeting these challenges will require annual investments of 200-300 billion US-$ over the next decades. Energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies will play an important role in that process. Participating in that global investment programme is both a challenge and a great opportunity for the growing clean energy industry in North and South. The International Symposium New Energy Markets promotes North-South cooperation on the development and dissemination of clean energy technologies. This year's country focus is on India, a country with remarkable achievements in clean energy development and deployment but still a huge potential of untapped resources in fields like power plant efficiency and renewable energy use. In all thematic sessions, speakers from India and Germany will provide latest information on available technologies, market development and business opportunities. To facilitate technology cooperation on a business to business level, two pre-organized brokerage events and a full-day workshop will be part of the conference scheme. Companies are invited to present their technology and service profiles in the exhibition area. How advanced renewable energy and power plant technology works in practice can be experienced at the site visits after the conference. Who should attend? manufacturers project developers government and regulatory bodies public and private entities engaged in international technology transfer clean energy associations researchers and academics and capecitabine.

In addition to the advances in China's shipbuilding capabilities, the commercialization of China's SBI in the past two decades has brought with it a dramatic increase in China's shipbuilding capacity. Adding production capacity and improving existing shipyard infrastructure have contributed to PLAN modernization. On one level, this expansion will allow China's shipyards to build greater numbers of large warships, such as modern cruisers and battleships, simultaneously if a political decision is made to increase naval procurement significantly. This increased capacity also has direct implications for China's ability to build an aircraft carrier. For the past decade, rumors have circulated that China is interested in buying or building a carrier. A Chinese military delegation is known to have considered buying Ukraine's Varyag, and the Spanish shipbuilder Bazan is reported to have submitted to China a design for a basic carrier.64 As noted earlier in this chapter, China now has eight yards capable of VLCC and ULCC construction, and it will add more such yards in the coming years. Many of these yards would be suitable for the construction of a large carrier. Another option for China would be to build a mediumsized carrier 30, 50, 000 tons ; for launching and retrieving helicopters or vertical short take-off landing VSTOL ; fixed-wing aircraft. Such a ship could be built from a relatively basic design based on LHD-type platforms i.e., multipurpose amphibious assault ships ; similar to the ones used by the United Kingdom, Japan, and Thailand. Such a vessel could also be completed at a number of modern yards in China, even ones without VLCC capacity--although with substantial naval shipbuilding experience and caverject.
