Although COPD and asthma are 2 different forms of chronic pulmonary disease, there is considerable overlap in presentation and management. Both conditions are caused by an interaction between intrinsic, genetic factors and environmental exposures. The pathophysiology of COPD and asthma involve multiple immunologicallymediated components, resulting in airway inflammation, obstruction, and hyperresponsiveness. Treatment of these diseases is similar in that they can both be managed with pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic strategies focused on treating bronchoconstriction and airway inflammation
EQUILIBRIUM RESPONSES IN A PARASITOID WASP, TORYMUS BACCHARIDIS. E.N. Feuerbacher * and M.H. Dickinson. University of California, Berkeley, efeuer socrates.berkeley In flying animals, equilibrium responses are important for maintaining stability in the face of external perturbations. Among insects, Dipterans possess the most sophisticated sensory system for detecting body rotations in flight The halteres of flies are modified hindwings capable of encoding Coriolis forces generated by rotation about yaw, pitch, and roll axes. However, the extreme maneuverability found in some nondipteran groups suggests that these insects might possess alternative means of detecting body rotations. An analysis of the underlying physics indicates that wings themselves might be used to sense Coriolis forces. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the equilibrium response in a small parasitoid wasp, Torymus baccharidis, using a rotating fright arena equipped with an optical wingbeat analyzer. The wasps modulated both wingbeat frequency and wingbeat amplitude when oscillated within the horizontal plane. Unlike similarlysized fruit flies, the wasps showed a much more pronounced response to oscillations about their pitch axis than about their roll axis. Our current hypothesis is that wasps may detect rotational forces using campaniform sensilla at the base of the wings.

W.H to. Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, China A 64-year physician from southern China, who visited Hong Kong on February in 2003 was believed to have been the source of infection for the large clusters of cases in Hong Kong, although he was definitely not the only source. Eventually a total of 1755 cases were reported in which there were 300 deaths and 386 22% ; healthcare workers. A review of the clinical presentations of these cases will be presented.References will also be made regarding the viral load studies on a special subgroup infected in a community outbreak. Key diagnostic features will also be discussed including the radiological and laboratory findings. Lessons learnt from the clinical management will be discussed especially in reference to the use of antibiotics, antivirals and the use of steroids. Over 70% of patients improve.
There. They also show that, at the therapeutic dosage, there is no danger of a continuous decrease in bone turnover in the long run, coupled with an increase in bone fragility, as seen in osteopetrosis. The decrease in resorption is accompanied by an increase in calcium balance 55, 56 ; and in mineral content of bone. This is possible because of an increase in intestinal absorption of calcium 55, 56 ; consequent to an elevation of 1, 25- OH ; 2 vitamin D. This increased balance is the reason for administering these compounds to humans suffering from osteoporosis. However, the increase is smaller than predicted, considering the dramatic decreases in bone resorption and bone formation 55, 56 ; , possibly due to the so-called "coupling" between formation and resorption. This will be discussed in a later section. Similar results are found in humans. Bisphosphonates decrease both resorption and formation, as described in numerous studies for reviews, see Refs. 12 and 14 ; . b. Animals with experimentally increased resorption including osteoporosis: Bisphosphonates can also prevent experimentally induced increases in bone resorption. They impair resorption induced by agents such as PTH 60, 61 ; , 1, 25- OH ; 2 vitamin D, and retinoids. The effect on retinoid-induced hy.

But there is no transversal map f going backwards special or not ; : in the right diagram above, any point x X would give f - x ; , 0 ; Now, the cylinder cospans admits `collars' suggested by dashed lines, in the figure above ; , while e1 X ; does not for X ; . However, working with the cylindrical cospans as weak identities for the collarable cospans gives various problems. In Part III, extending our construction to cubical collared cospans, of any degree, we will see that the cubical relation e1 e1 e2 cannot be fulfilled with cylindrical cospans: we would not even get a cubical set. Already here as a minor point ; , if we want the new structure to be a weak double subcategory of Cosp Top ; , we must keep the same degeneracies. This is why we will use a generalised notion of collarable cospan, including the degenerate ones as `trivially collarable'. Finally, one can think of a third alternative, which presents other technical problems. One can modify Cosp Top ; with a `better' concatenation of consecutive cospans, say u 1 v, realised by means of standard homotopy pushouts instead of using ordinary pushouts and restricting cospans, as we do below ; . Now, associativity works well.

Risk factors. Numerous studies have investigated the possible risk factors for the development of transplant CAD 3 8 ; . Controversies still exist regarding donor and recipient factors which promote the development and progression of CAD after transplantation. Both immunologic and nonimmunologic factors could contribute to the occurrence of transplant coronary artery disease. Older recipient age, older donor age, male recipient, female donor, recipient with ischemic heart disease, allograft ischemic time, CMV infection, hyperlipidemia, obesity, immunosuppression, acute rejection, prophylactic diltiazem use, HLA mismatches and racial disparity have been recognized as the risk factors 39, 2225 ; . In Table 2, we compare the donor and recipient characteristics between our patients and Western patients 3 8, 24 ; . The donor age, recipient age and percentage of male gender were the same. Pretransplant diagnosis of recipients in our study was less due to ischemic heart disease. The prevalence of ischemic heart disease is low in Oriental countries possibly due to low fat and high vegetable diet. Cytomegalovirus infection. Human CMV infection has been recognized as a significant risk factor of transplant CAD, and prophylactic ganciclovir therapy may protect against the development of transplant CAD 3, 22 ; . In this study, more than 90% of donors and recipients had positive CMV antibody before transplantation. The incidence of CMV mismatches between donors and recipients was also low. The percentage of CMV seronegative recipients was.

A patent vascular access is the crux of hemodialysis maintenance therapy. Transitioning from the use of the Scribner shunt to the Brescia-Cimino fistula made the option of chronic dialysis therapy available. Further development and application of polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE ; synthetic grafts to create dialysis access anastomosis allowed for early maturation and ease of access cannulation--particularly in those with small vessels or fistula maturation failure and in those that present late for dialysis initiation. However, this comes with enormous morbidity and cost to the patient, with over 25% of all end-stage renal disease ESRD ; hospitalizations related to vascular access complications at a cost of over one billion dollars.1-2 Vascular access thrombosis accounts for up to 85% of these complications.2 Stenosis, primarily of the access outflow veins, accounts for 90% of the lesions associated with thrombosis. Re-establishing patency of a thrombosed access relies on surgical or radiologic intervention with thrombectomy, angio or venoplasty, stent placement, or access revision. Repeated thrombectomies and or vessel angio or venoplasty, particularly for PTFE accesses, only extends access patency short term.3 Therefore, strategies to prevent thrombosis of the vascular access are important. Given that fistula accesses have greater patency, fistula placement should be considered whenever possible. Type and site of fistula placement may affect both the maturation and access thrombosis. Once mature, fistula access types--specifically, radiocephalic and brachiocephalic fistulas--have by far the greatest patency rates, with primary unassisted patency of 70% or more at three years.2 Primary fistula maturation failure can be significant for many elderly, diabetic, female patients who have small vessels, thus predisposing them to placement of a transposition basilic vein fistula or PTFE graft. When thrombosis and maturation failure are combined, the rates of fistula patency are similar for brachiocephalic and brachiobasilic fistulas.4 Radiobasilic fistulas have slightly higher rates of early thrombosis in comparison with brachiobasilic, but similar patency when treated with secondary intervention.5 Transposed brachiobasilic vein fistulas have reported assisted patency of approximately 65% at one year, 55% at two years, and 43% at three years.6-8 This is similar to assisted patency of 50% at three years for PTFE grafts.2 and vfend.
